Let the Good Times Jol

Following the somewhat surprise departure of Mark Hughes on 2nd of June 2011, Fulham knew they had to move on and find a manager quickly, so he can prepare the squad for the upcoming Europa League campaign which is due to begin on the 30th of June. They acted as quick as possible and on the 7th of June 2011 Martin Jol was appointed the new Fulham manager.

After the disappointment of Ajax not allowing Jol to leave in Summer 2010 due to contractual situations, I feel that Fulham have now got their first choice man for the job and I’m personally very happy with the situation. He has proven he can cut it in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur by taking them from 9th position in 2004-05 to a solid 5th place and only missing out on Champions League football on the final day in 2005-06 and another solid 5th place in 2006-07. The reason I state these facts and find them so important is because in the past 3 seasons, Fulham have finished 7th, 12th and 8th (08-09,09-10 and 10-11) respectively and have made a Europa League Final. This does somewhat shadow some Tottenham league finishes and Fulham would like to consider themselves a dark horse to the top 6, and think that Jol may lead them there. Further evidence to back this up is a 5th place finish and German F.A and League Cup Semi-Final appearances with Hamburger SV and a Dutch Cup and League Runners up medal with Ajax.

Jol may not offer the marquee names linked with Fulham like Hughes was e.g. Shaun Wright Phillips and Roque Santa Cruz to name but a few, this considered, he has a good record of buying players and them performing for the team, e.g. Dimitar Berbatov signed by Jol for £10.9 million off Bayer Leverkusen and sold to Manchester United for £30.75 million and Aaron Lennon in 2005 signed for £1 million from Leeds United.

I think that keeping onto our star players and avoiding injuries, Jol will be able to assess the squad and bring in the right faces to add to our improving squad, while making it fit into his grounded and solid managerial style, and the evidence that he can take clubs on the edge of top 6 in Germany and England, and giving a top Dutch Club a Runners up medal and cup,

he understands the Fulham mentality and the direction we are looking to progress as a team. The one thing that needs to improve is the away results, in 2010-11 Mark Hughes had given us 3 away wins, before that I think it was 3 in 3 seasons or something dreadful, also another Europa League run or a decent F.A cup wouldnt be too much to ask in the fans eyes. Bring on June the 30th and hope he can organise a team by that date!
